The National Assembly has expressed concern over Nigeria’s border closure, calling it counterproductive, especially in light of growing insecurity and economic challenges.
The joint committee on Industry, Trade, and Investment criticized the porous borders, particularly with Niger and Chad, arguing that the closure has worsened smuggling and insecurity rather than curbing them. Senator Francis Adenigba Fadaunsi highlighted that border closure has hurt local production, with a significant portion of rice imports being smuggled.
Lawmaker Fatima Talba echoed concerns, suggesting that the borders are effectively open despite the closure. The committee has urged the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment to consult with the Presidency for a resolution, while pointing out discrepancies in the ministry’s budget submissions.
