Nigerian government is trying to manage a delicate situation with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over the recent telecommunications tariff hike. The meeting scheduled for today (Monday) at 5 p.m. will likely be a critical moment in trying to prevent a nationwide protest that’s scheduled for tomorrow (February 4). The NLC has voiced strong opposition to the hike, as it could further strain the financial situation for many Nigerians.
The hike itself, approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), was blamed on global inflation by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani. However, there’s clear discontent from both workers and telecom subscribers, with the National Association of Telecoms Subscribers preparing to take legal action.
It’s a tense moment, as the federal government has to balance the broader economic factors while addressing the concerns of the citizens and labor unions. It will be interesting to see how the government responds in the meeting today, and whether they can reach an agreement before the protest takes place. What’s your take on the tariff hike and the situation overall?
