The recent gruesome murder of 43 rice farmers at Zabarmari village in Jere Local Government of Borno State on Saturday has once again brought to the fore the state of insecurity in the North-East and Nigeria in general.
President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the devilish killings and also, seem to have absolved himself from blame as he said that his administration had given the military all they needed to fight insurgency and keep the country safe.
Boko Haram insurgents on saturday invaded rice farms, capture the farmers. Reports said that the farmers were tied up and their throats were slit open, killing 43 of them on Saturday in in Jere Local Government of Borno State.
According to Presidential aide, Garba Shehu, the president condemned, “the killing of our hardworking farmers by terrorists in Borno State. The entire country is hurt by these senseless killings. My thoughts are with their families in this time of grief. May their souls Rest In Peace.”
In addition, Shehu said that President Buhari pointed out that his government had given all the needed support to the armed forces “to take all necessary steps to protect the country’s population and its territory.”
Meanwhile, some Nigerians, as a result of the sad incident had taken to social media to demand the immediate dismisal of all the heads of security agencies in the country.
Reacting to the incident, the former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, said the president must take urgent steps to restructure the security architecture of the country, as the current arrangement was not working.
He said in a tweet, “Heartbreaking. Words fail me. The lives of our citizens should be worth much more than this. The rejig of the nation’s security architecture is long overdue. May their souls rest in peace and may their families be comforted.”
