Child trafficking: Family in Enugu state petition IG, accuse CP for hiding the culprit.

The family of Mr. Okechukwu Ani from Nkanu East LGA, Enugu State, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) accusing the Enugu State Police of shielding suspects involved in their child’s alleged trafficking. In their petition dated August 5, 2024, the family, through their lawyer Samuel Abazie, claims that the Enugu Police released Mrs. Caroline C. Ani, who, along with Mr. Peter Chiadikaobi Igiri (in custody), is accused of trafficking their son, Master Godwin Ani.

The lawyer alleges that Mrs. Ani was released on bail due to insufficient evidence and her connections, despite claims that she and Mr. Igiri operated a trafficking syndicate. Additional claims include that Mrs. Ani and her associates, including Mrs. Chinelo Nwosu and Mrs. Ebere Ani, were involved in the sale of several children, including Master Godwin Ani. The family has requested the IGP to ensure the re-arrest of the suspects based on new evidence.

The Enugu State Police spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, had not responded further by the time of the report.
