In the past two weeks, bandits have abducted over 40 residents from various communities in Maru Local Government Area, Zamfara State. The attacks have intensified, with the bandits carrying out house-to-house searches, including a recent raid that resulted in the kidnapping of seven people from Maru town. Alhaji Umar Abdullahi, a local resident, highlighted the growing concern of these attacks, blaming the involvement of informants who assist the bandits in identifying their targets, particularly prominent community members.
The bandits are believed to be operating from camps near Bakalori Dam in the Maradun Local Government Area, further exacerbating the security crisis. Abdullahi and another resident, Usman Abubakar, called for immediate action from the federal and state governments, urging the deployment of more troops to dismantle the bandit camps.
Maru has long been plagued by banditry, with the district of Dansadau, once the epicenter, now seeing attacks spread across the entire area. Bandit violence has escalated to the point where, a few months ago, several police officers, including a Divisional Police Officer (DPO), were killed. Despite these severe challenges, attempts to get a response from the state police have not yielded results.
