DIG Alabi warn journalist to desist from publishing sensational story capable of worsening insecurity situation.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Abiodun Alabi, has urged journalists to avoid publishing sensational and unverified news that could worsen the current insecurity in Nigeria. Speaking at a lecture in Ado-Ekiti during the 2024 annual press week organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Alabi emphasized the media’s role in promoting national peace and security.

He called for responsible reporting that is accurate and balanced, warning against sensationalism and emotionally charged language that could escalate tensions. Alabi also highlighted the need for initiatives to cut off terrorist financing and enhance cybersecurity measures.

Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji praised local journalists for their fair reporting and promised continued collaboration. NUJ Vice President Mrs. Ronke Samo called for a functional government and free flow of information. Traditional leader Oba Adegbenro Falore emphasized the importance of community cooperation with security forces to tackle ongoing challenges.
