Oruku Community in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State was on Sunday engulfed in chaos as the traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Emmanuel Chidiebere Mba, was reportedly shot dead while he was addressing members of his community at Oruku Town Hall.
The incident threw the community into a pandemonium as youths protested setting houses and vehicles ablaze.
According to The PUNCH, there were claims that it was the policemen who shot the traditional ruler dead, a claim the news media said it could not immediately ascertain.
Narrating the incident, sources said that on Sunday morning, the policemen, who were on mufti, wielding AK-47 rifles, had invaded the venue of the meeting in an SUV and a Sienna bus about 2 pm on December 26, 2020.
“The traditional ruler was presiding over the meeting and the three natives pointed at him, immediately one of the policemen shot him on the thigh and he fell down bleeding. There was confusion after the royal father was shot. Everybody in the hall ran for safety,” one of the sources said.
He reportedly bled to death before he could get medical attention and his corpse was deposited at the National Orthopedic Hospital mortuary.
Owing to the incident, on that Saturday evening, some aggrieved members of the Oruku community regrouped and attacked the homes of some members of the community.
The mob was said to have set more than four houses and some vehicles ablaze.
Enugu Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, couldn’t be reached as he did not pick his call.
The royal father was said to have been elected by his community on December 26, 2019, making it a year he has been on the throne.
