FG to Strengthen Military Presence in Sokoto Against Banditry

Newsie Events:-

The federal government is set to establish three military units in Sokoto to bolster efforts against banditry and other criminal activities.

Defence Minister Bello Matawalle announced this initiative on Thursday while leading military personnel to reopen the Marnona-Gundumi-Isa road, which had been closed for eight years due to security concerns.

During his visit, he engaged with communities in Isa, Sabon Birni, and Goronyo local government areas.

The reopening of these roads marks a significant achievement in the ongoing operations in the North-West region. Matawalle emphasized that this was his second visit to Sokoto for a coordinated offensive against bandits and terrorists.

“As instructed by President Bola Tinubu, I have returned to Sokoto to lead efforts to eradicate bandits and other criminals. We have made progress, with our troops eliminating key gang leaders and members in various locations, restoring relative peace particularly in Sokoto, Zamfara, and Katsina states,” he stated.

Matawalle expressed confidence in the military’s ability to maintain these gains in the ongoing fight against crime.

He highlighted the necessity of collaboration with the federal government and urged support from state governors, religious, political, and community leaders to effectively combat banditry.

He also reassured residents of deserted areas to return, assuring them of government commitment to their safety.

However, he cautioned against acting as informants for bandits, labeling it a serious offense, and promised that anyone caught would face consequences.
