Security personnel in the convoy of Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, disrupted a Boko Haram ambush along the Damaturu–Biu road in Yobe State, rescuing several kidnapped travelers and recovering abandoned weapons.
The attack occurred near Gujba town at approximately 4:48 p.m. on Monday as the convoy returned from Biu, where the governor had commissioned projects. Governor Zulum had earlier departed the convoy for an urgent engagement in Maiduguri, leaving senior government officials to lead the return.
Eyewitnesses reported that the insurgents blocked the highway, seized vehicles, and forced passengers to lie face down.
One rescued victim, Malum Ari, described how the militants took his car keys and held the group hostage before the security team arrived, engaging the attackers in a gunfight and forcing them to retreat.
Ari estimated that over 20 armed men were involved, with some fleeing in panic. One insurgent reportedly fell twice while escaping on a motorcycle.
The incident follows a recent Boko Haram attack on Gujba town, where militants killed a 32-year-old vigilante, Modu Bulama, and set fire to shops and homes.
