The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has condemned the harassment and intimidation of journalists under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. The group highlighted the recent summons of three journalists from Alimosho Today by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, raising concerns over the lack of transparency about the nature of the inquiry.
HURIWA criticized the use of security agencies to suppress the press and noted a troubling trend of arbitrary arrests and detentions of journalists. The association cited multiple cases, including the detention of Daniel Ojukwu, Segun Olatunji, and others, as evidence of increasing repression.
The group warned that the misuse of laws like the Cybercrime Act to target journalists poses a serious threat to press freedom and democracy, potentially leading Nigeria towards authoritarianism. They urged vigilance against such abuses to protect democratic principles.
