HURIWA has denounced the Nigerian government’s prosecution of #EndBadGovernance protesters, labeling it as a deliberate attempt to suppress dissent and intimidate citizens exercising their constitutional rights. The group criticized the charges of treason, conspiracy, and incitement, which they deem unfounded and a violation of democratic principles.
The protesters, including Michael Tobiloba Adaramoye and others, faced serious allegations such as attempting to destabilize Nigeria and attacking police facilities. HURIWA’s statement condemned these actions as persecution, arguing that the government is misusing its power to stifle advocacy for good governance.
Additionally, HURIWA took issue with the Inspector General of Police’s (IGP) role in these accusations, questioning the legitimacy of his claims and suggesting his actions might be an effort to maintain his position amid a controversial tenure extension. The organization called for the protesters’ immediate release and urged the government to address the underlying issues that prompted the protests, such as corruption and economic mismanagement.
