The recent attack on the General Hospital in Kankara, Katsina State, has drawn significant attention, particularly due to the N540 million ransom demanded by the bandits for the release of the kidnapped staff members. This tragic event, which also left Dr. Murtala Sale Dandashire and another victim injured, underscores the persistent threat posed by banditry in the region.
The kidnappers have split the ransom demand: N270 million for Yusuf Muhammad Mairuwa, the Assistant Director of Nursing Services, and another N270 million for other kidnapped staff members, including those from a nearby fertilizer factory.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has condemned the attack, emphasizing that while progress has been made in reducing such incidents, the recent attack highlights the ongoing challenges. He has promised to implement stronger security measures to protect healthcare workers, stressing their safety as a top priority for the state government. This commitment includes a review of security strategies and increased security presence at healthcare facilities.
The situation reflects broader concerns about the safety of medical personnel and the increasing insecurity in some regions of Nigeria. It is hoped that these measures will help curb such attacks and provide a safer environment for both healthcare workers and the public.
