In a recent interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Fouad Oki, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), provided a justification for the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Oki asserted that Obasa’s impeachment was necessary to hold him accountable for his alleged misconduct, particularly accusations of fraud.
Oki expressed that Obasa’s leadership style had become increasingly autocratic, likening him to an emperor. He argued that the impeachment was “foreseeable” and had been a long time coming, pointing out that over the past 18 months, Obasa’s behavior and decisions had made it clear that a change in leadership was required. Oki referenced the events surrounding the 2025 appropriation bill, suggesting that these developments further highlighted Obasa’s departure from acceptable leadership standards.
The impeachment occurred on January 14, 2025, and led to the election of Mojisola Meranda as the new Deputy Speaker, who will now lead the House.
