N80.2 billion allegations: Yaya Bello under efcc custody.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello in connection with an alleged N80.2 billion fraud. Bello was taken into custody after presenting himself at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, accompanied by his lawyers. This followed months of avoiding repeated invitations from the commission. EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the detention, stating that Bello was arrested by the commission’s chief security officer.

Earlier in the year, on April 18, 2024, the EFCC had declared Bello wanted for his involvement in a money laundering case related to the significant sum of N80.2 billion. While Bello attended the EFCC office on his own, his successor, Governor Usman Ododo of Kogi State, had visited the office earlier but was not part of the entourage during Bello’s detention.
