Nigerian security operatives have reportedly arrested Hamza Suruddubu, a notorious arms trafficker accused of supplying weapons to terrorist groups responsible for attacks in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
According to sources familiar with the operation, counter-insurgency expert and security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed that Suruddubu, a well-known arms dealer from Eastern Sokoto, has been heavily involved in smuggling and distributing firearms from Zamfara State to terrorist hideouts in the region.
His clientele allegedly includes some of the most feared bandit leaders, such as Bello Turji, Boka, and Halilu Buzu. Beyond arms trafficking, security analysts claim Suruddubu also facilitates the supply of essential goods, including food and motorcycles, to criminal groups operating in the area.
Alarmingly, some sources suggest that corrupt security operatives in Shinkafi and Isa local government areas may be involved in the illegal arms trade, raising concerns about the credibility of security efforts in the region.
This development comes amid increasing fears over Turji’s growing influence in Sokoto. A Sokoto State lawmaker, Minu Boza, recently accused the notorious terrorist of imposing a ₦25 million levy on villages in the eastern part of the state, further tightening his control over local communities.
Boza, who represents Sabon Birnin Gobir in the Sokoto State Assembly, warned of Turji’s presence in Isa and Sabon Birni, urging security agencies to take immediate action.
“Bello Turji is currently in the Isa and Sabon Birni axis of Sokoto. He has even imposed a ₦25 million levy per village in some communities,” Boza told journalists.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, revealed that Turji may be considering surrendering to security forces.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, General Musa explained that sustained military operations have significantly weakened Turji’s network, leaving him with few options.
“He is now forced to release most of the people under him,” General Musa said. “Recently, he has begun to say he doesn’t want anything; he is ready to surrender.”
