Olisah Metu, the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP)’s former National Publicity Secretary, has been released from prison after 10 months of serving a jail term, Channels TV reports.
Mr. Ayodele Fayose, the immediate past governor of Ekiti State and a PDP chieftain shared pictures of Mr. Metuh leaving the Nigerian Medium Security Custodial Center, Kuje, Abuja on his Twitter handle.
He wrote” “Welcome back home Olisa Metuh, tough time don’t last…” as he congratulated the former spokesman for the opposition party.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), prosecuted Metuh along with his company Destra Investment Limited, before Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja, and he was charged with seven counts of illegally receiving monies to the tune of N400 million from the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), under Colonel Sambo Dasuki.
On February 25, 2020, Justice Abang convicted and sentenced the former PDP spokesman to seven years imprisonment.
Metuh, unsatisfied with his conviction and sentencing, approached the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal with an application seeking to set aside the ruling of the lower court.
He alleged among others, during his argument, that the trial Judge was biased and failed to accord him a fair hearing.
The appeal court saw reasons in Metuh’s argument and agreed that the trial judge was biased and quashed the judgement after about 10 months of the judgement of the Federal High Court.
On Wednesday last week, during its ruling, the panel of three justices, led by Justice Stephen Adah, ordered a retrial of the case.
The EFCC, after reviewing the judgement of the appellate court, said it would approach the Supreme Court to challenge it.
Metuh was released from the correctional facility in Kuje, Abuja a week after the appellate court delivered the judgment.
