The Nigeria Police Force has called on the Take It Back Movement (TIB) and other affiliated groups to suspend their planned nationwide protest set for April 7, citing concerns over the timing and intent of the demonstration.

According to the DAILY POST, the protest is being organized to challenge alleged abuses of the Cybercrime Act and the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. The National Coordinator of TIB, Juwon Sanyaolu, emphasized that the demonstration aims to bring attention to these pressing national issues.

However, in a statement released on Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police described the protest as “ill-timed and mischievous.” Adejobi noted that April 7 coincides with the newly designated National Police Day, a date set aside by the Federal Government to honor the dedication and service of the Nigeria Police Force.

“This day is meant to celebrate the resilience and dedication of officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force. It will host dignitaries from across Nigeria and around the world, including foreign Inspectors-General of Police and diplomats,” Adejobi explained.

While affirming the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful protest, the Police expressed concern about the potential disruption to an event of national significance. The statement encouraged the organizers to seek alternative means of engaging the government through dialogue and proper institutional channels.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to upholding the law and respecting citizens’ rights while urging all parties involved to reconsider their plans in the interest of peace and national unity.
