The Benue State Police Command has increased its presence in Makurdi, the state capital, amid concerns over planned hunger protests starting August 1.
The enhanced security appears to be a precautionary measure, following assurances from various local groups, including student unions and market associations, that they will not participate in the protests.
Governor Hyacinth Alia has emphasized the need for stability in light of recent insecurities and expressed gratitude to those avoiding the protests. Police spokesperson Catherine Anene clarified that the increased police visibility aims to reassure residents and deter potential disturbances.
