Resident doctors osun state chapter stage protest demanding release of their member under abduction.

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) Osun State University Teaching Hospital (UNIOSUNTH) chapter recently staged a peaceful protest demanding the unconditional release of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, who was abducted on December 27, 2023.

Dr. Popoola, a registrar in ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna, was taken along with her husband and nephew. While her husband was released in March, Dr. Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity.

The protest, held at the UNIOSUNTH premises in Osogbo, saw large participation from doctors, who displayed placards urging for Dr. Popoola’s release. Dr. Ojo Damilola John, President of NARD UNIOSUNTH, expressed frustration with the government’s inaction and warned of a potential strike if their demands are not met.

Dr. Ilori Solomon, NARD Vice President 1, emphasized the importance of healthcare professionals and threatened industrial action on August 26 if Dr. Popoola is not freed by then. Both leaders called for immediate action from security agencies and government officials to secure Dr. Popoola’s release.
