The public hearing on President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills has sparked significant discussion, particularly among Arewa groups, who believe that these reforms will benefit the northern region of Nigeria. The Tax Reform Bills, which include the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, Tax Administration Bill, Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill, are designed to create a more efficient and fair taxation system across the country.
Alhaji Adamu Muazu Garuba, the convener of the Northern Union, spoke on behalf of a coalition of Arewa groups after the public hearing. He emphasized that the tax reforms align with the goals of promoting economic growth, fairness, and simplicity. Despite initial opposition from some northern leaders, Garuba expressed confidence that the reforms would positively impact the North, especially through a simplified tax system that could attract investments, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth.
Garuba also highlighted that the North, being a significant contributor to Nigeria’s economy, would benefit from reduced tax compliance costs, making it easier for businesses and communities to invest. This would be particularly advantageous for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which play a critical role in the northern economy. Additionally, the increased revenue from these reforms could help fund essential infrastructure projects and social programs, addressing challenges in healthcare, education, and transportation infrastructure in the region.
The reforms are expected to promote fairness by reducing the tax burden on low-income earners, eliminate multiple taxation, and foster transparency and accountability in the tax system. Garuba concluded by urging northerners to support the reforms, which he believes will be in their best interest, and praised Senator Sani Musa, the Senate Committee Chairman, for his impartiality in ensuring that all voices were heard during the hearing.
