The University of Calabar (UniCal) has suspended lecturer Joseph Akpan for allegedly altering exam scores. Vice Chancellor Prof. Florence Obi announced that Akpan, while serving as Head of Department for Pharmacology, modified 235 out of 242 exam result scripts for the course Introduction to General Antimicrobial Pharmacology (PHM 311).

He reportedly gave marks to two students who did not sit for the exams and admitted to inflating scores to protect the department’s image during an inquiry by the Senate Examination Misconduct Committee. As a result, Akpan has been removed from his positions and instructed to avoid the university unless responding to committee inquiries, effective October 8, 2024. His responsibilities will be reassigned to other qualified lecturers.
