The tragic incident that occurred on Thursday evening in Cross River has left a Police Inspector dead and two Chinese nationals, along with a Nigerian, kidnapped. The Inspector, whose identity has not yet been made public, was fatally shot by gunmen at a quarry site in the Akamkpa Local Government Area. The attackers, dressed in military camouflage, also took the officer’s AK-47 rifle and abducted the foreign nationals and the Nigerian worker at the Marksino quarry.
The Zone Six Police spokesperson, SP Nelson Okpabi, confirmed the attack and noted that the assailants gained access to the quarry after a civilian worker, tasked with security duties, allowed them entry. Following the incident, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone Six, AIG Jonathan Towuru, has initiated a manhunt for the gunmen. He directed the Assistant Commissioner of Police to immediately investigate the scene and ensure coordinated efforts are in place to secure the release of the victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.
AIG Towuru has expressed his condolences to the family of the fallen Inspector and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the safety of the victims and the apprehension of the criminals responsible for the attack.
