Sunday Asefon has been elected as the president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) amidst violence that characterised its convention at the old parade ground, Abuja on Thursday.
Sunday Asefon who is 45-year old is reported to be a student of Ekiti State University.
Asefon is a civil servant with the Ekiti State Government. He got 155 votes to defeat his closest rival, Olushola Oladoja, who scored 100 votes.
The election was characterized by violence.
About 20 members of the association who were present at the old parade ground in Abuja sustained gun shots wounds and wounds from machete after thugs loyal to a factional coordinator of the association in Zone D (Southwest) began attacking delegates.
About 20 thugs stormed the venue with dangerous weapons during accreditation of Students Union Government (SUG) Presidents under NANS Zone B and Zone D.
Azeez Adeyemi, National Public Relations Officer of the association, was allegedly arrested by DSS operatives after guns and ammunition were found in a bus which belongs to Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY).
