The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed concern over the low number of applications for the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) from students in the southern region of Nigeria. NANS urged southern students to take advantage of the scheme, which was established by the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to support students in accessing higher education and developing functional skills.

Abdul-Yekinn Odunayo, Clerk of the Senate at NANS National headquarters, pointed out that students from the northern region have been benefiting more from the loan, and warned that southern students would be doing a disservice to themselves by not following suit. He praised NELFUND for simplifying the loan process and commended the administration for launching the initiative.

While acknowledging the positive impact the scheme has had on many financially disadvantaged students, Odunayo called on NELFUND to engage in more publicity efforts to raise awareness, especially among students in the southern part of Nigeria.
