The National Coalition of NGOs and Civil Society Organizations in Nigeria (NCNCSON) has called on the Taraba State government to take immediate action to resolve the ongoing leadership crisis at the College of Nursing and Midwifery in Jalingo. The coalition, in a statement issued on Monday, emphasized the importance of addressing the situation to preserve the institution’s integrity.
According to the coalition, the leadership dispute stems from failure to follow proper retirement protocols and non-compliance with the standards set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). Additionally, allegations of mismanagement and irregularities in appointments were highlighted, with concerns that these issues could escalate into a deeper crisis if not addressed promptly.
The coalition recommended several measures to resolve the crisis, including the implementation of a transparent, merit-based process for leadership appointments, adherence to civil service rules, and regulatory standards for appointments and retirements. It also advocated for the transfer of oversight of the institution to the Ministry of Tertiary Education while maintaining its partnership with the Ministry of Health.
The statement underscored the urgency of resolving these issues to support the governor’s vision for educational excellence and to ensure the College of Nursing and Midwifery remains a key institution for healthcare education in Nigeria. The NCNCSON reiterated its commitment to collaborating with the government and stakeholders to promote accountability, transparency, and sustainable development in the education sector.
