The recent controversy over the poor feeding of students at the Presbyterian Senior Science College in Ibiono Ibom, Akwa Ibom, has sparked demands for a broader investigation into the state’s education system. After a viral video exposed the substandard meals provided to students despite them paying boarding fees, residents and experts called for an expanded probe beyond the school itself, focusing on the State Secondary Education Board.
Many believe the poor conditions reflect systemic issues across public boarding schools, with allegations of corruption, mismanagement, and inadequate oversight by officials. Some claim that principals are required to pay bribes to secure their positions, which may contribute to poor school conditions and misuse of funds meant for student welfare. Public affairs analysts have criticized the Commissioner for Education for acting only after the viral video surfaced, and residents have expressed frustration over the lack of proactive measures.
Further scrutiny is being demanded not only on the quality of boarding school facilities but also on the integrity and competence of the officials overseeing the education system. Some believe the governor should take decisive action to reform the educational structure, questioning whether the current leadership is genuinely committed to improving the state’s schools.
