Students from the University of Ibadan (UI) have staged a peaceful protest over the ongoing 82-day power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, which serves as a training ground for UI’s medical students.
The outage began in March 2024 after UCH’s electricity supply was cut off by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) due to unpaid bills. The situation worsened after another disconnection in November 2023.
The Students’ Union President, Bolaji Aweda, led the protest, emphasizing the adverse effects on students’ education and training. The protestors are calling for the restoration of power, which will depend on UCH settling its outstanding debt with IBEDC.
