On Friday, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command fired tear gas at protesters gathered at Ibom Plaza for the second day of a nationwide hunger protest.
The demonstration, marked by placards calling for the end of bad governance and a reduction in fuel prices, saw a New Nigerian Newspapers journalist among those affected by the tear gas.
Protesters, who chanted solidarity songs, were eventually moved by the police to Unity Park on Udoudoma Avenue.
One protester, who spoke anonymously, criticized the high cost of fuel and basic food items, arguing that despite an increase in the minimum wage, it remains insufficient to cover basic needs. The protest had faced disruptions on its first day due to police restrictions and heavy rainfall.
