Nigeria’s renowned music icon, Onyeka Onwenu, has passed away at the age of 72.
Eyewitnesses confirmed her death to The Niche.
Onwenu reportedly collapsed at a birthday party organized by Mrs. Stella Okoli in Lagos.
The tragedy occurred after she had finished performing at the event.
Despite being rushed to Reddington Hospital in Lagos, she did not survive.
“It’s very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at Mrs. Stella Okoli’s birthday today, and after performing, she collapsed. She was taken to Reddington Hospital, but she couldn’t make it,” the source said.
Onyeka Onwenu was celebrated as a songwriter, singer, performer, broadcaster, politician, and more.
In addition to her illustrious music career, she served as Chairperson of the Imo State Council of Arts and Culture and was appointed Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Women Development Centre by the Goodluck Jonathan administration in 2013.
