Akwa Ibom State has reported four confirmed cases of monkeypox from January to August 2024, according to Samuel S. Etuk, Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer at the state Ministry of Health. The cases include two from Uyo, one from Nsit Ubium, and one from Onna local government areas. The affected individuals are three males aged 2, 4, and 15.
Etuk highlighted that Mpox is a zoonotic viral disease transmitted from animals to humans, with no specific treatment available. He emphasized preventive measures, including regular handwashing, seeking medical attention for symptoms, and avoiding self-medication. He also urged media personnel to help educate the public on these preventive practices.
Nkoyo Umoh, Program Officer at Breakthrough ACTION-Nigeria, stressed the media’s role in promoting adherence to infection prevention measures to improve public understanding and behavior regarding Mpox.
