The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has issued a stern warning to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, demanding that several outstanding issues be addressed within 14 days, or face what they described as the “deadliest hospital shutdown.”
Dr. George Ebong, the President of ARD, made this announcement at a press conference on Monday at Wuse District Hospital in Abuja. While appreciating Wike’s infrastructural projects in the FCT, Ebong emphasized the urgent need for attention to the welfare of doctors, who are reportedly suffering from economic hardships.
The ARD’s demands include the clearance of six months’ salary arrears for doctors employed in 2023, payment of the 2024 Medical Residency Training Fund, and a review of the bonding policy from six years to two years. They are also calling for the immediate payment of the 2024 accoutrements allowance, outstanding hazard allowances, and the fast-tracking of the conversion of certain medical staff to consultants. Additionally, the ARD is asking for the recruitment of more healthcare workers to address manpower shortages in the capital’s hospitals.
Dr. Ebong warned that if these demands are not met, the situation could lead to a severe shutdown of medical facilities in the capital, which could impact patient care and result in loss of lives. This ultimatum follows a previous 21-day notice, with only 14 days remaining before the action is taken.
