The Nigerian government has confirmed that over 4 million children in the Northeast and Northwest regions are suffering from malnutrition.
Mrs. Ladidi Bako-Aiyebusi, Director of the Nutrition Department at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, announced this at a meeting with nutrition experts and stakeholders in Nasarawa State.
The meeting, which is being held in collaboration with Civil Society-Scaling Up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN) and other partners, aims to develop strategic advocacy policies for improving nutrition in Nigeria.
Bako-Aiyebusi highlighted that Nigeria is grappling with a severe malnutrition crisis, marked by deficiencies in both macro and micronutrients, undernutrition, and overnutrition. Causes include inadequate food access, poor feeding practices, economic and political issues, low economic status, and insufficient education.
