On August 17, 2024, resident doctors across Nigeria protested, demanding the release of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, who has been abducted in Kaduna State since December 27, 2023.
Dr. Popoola, a nursing mother, was taken with her husband and nephew from their quarters at the National Eye Centre. While her husband was released in March 2024 after a ransom was paid, Dr. Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity.
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has expressed frustration with the government’s response and has threatened to strike if she is not freed.
