Youths in Ikom LGA of C’river state pursue Chinese factory give reasons.

The situation in Effi community, Ikom LGA of Cross River State, revolves around several key issues raised by the local youths regarding the Chinese-operated wood processing factory:

  1. Lack of Proper Documentation: The youths claim the Chinese nationals lack legitimate authorization to operate in the community, including necessary registration and agreements with local authorities.
  2. Poor Working Conditions: Reports indicate that workers, including underage children, are subjected to unsafe working conditions without proper safety equipment, and are allegedly treated poorly and even beaten.
  3. Health and Safety Concerns: There have been reports of injuries among the workers, with allegations that the factory management showed no concern for their welfare.
  4. Community Relations: The community demands transparency about the agreements between the factory and the local chiefs, asserting that the lack of clear documentation and perceived exploitation is unacceptable.

The Chief Security Officer of the factory mentioned that the issue of the agreement should be addressed through community leaders and legal representatives rather than directly by the company. The community lawyer, on the other hand, asserts that the factory has valid documentation and agreements in place.
