Hillary Clinton recently criticized Elon Musk’s influence over the ongoing U.S. government spending debate, suggesting that the Republican Party is following his orders, which could lead to a government shutdown. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Clinton highlighted that the shutdown would disrupt paychecks for troops and nutrition benefits for low-income families during the holiday season. Her comments reflect the tension surrounding the Republican stance on government funding.
Musk, known for his significant influence in political circles, reportedly opposed the spending deal negotiated by House Speaker Mike Johnson with Democrats. Musk threatened to back primary challenges against Republicans who voted for the deal, contributing to the push for a new, more conservative version of the spending bill. This new bill, which included disaster aid and a suspension of the debt ceiling, failed to pass in the House, with some Republicans refusing to support it and Democrats united in opposition.
Clinton’s comments underscore the increasing influence of tech billionaires like Musk on U.S. politics, especially as the government faces a potential shutdown if a funding deal isn’t reached by the deadline.
