Activist Madubuachi Idam has called on Nigeria’s National Assembly to draft legislation regulating the international debts of Nigerian states following the seizure of Nigerian presidential jets in France by a Chinese company.
Idam argues that the incident, linked to a $74.5 million debt owed by Ogun State, highlights the need for oversight and control over state debts.
He suggests that the legislation should include provisions for federal government intervention in debt repayment and tie debts to state allocations to prevent future international embarrassments.
