The recent endorsements of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, for the Lagos State governorship in 2027 have sparked mixed reactions from various groups. Some have supported his candidacy, citing his philanthropic efforts and leadership potential. For instance, the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL) praised his contributions to society, and a group called Friends of Seyi Tinubu (FOST) described him as a visionary leader.
However, the endorsements have faced strong opposition. Prominent APC member Joe Igbokwe criticized the support, suggesting it was an attempt to undermine President Tinubu. The Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths rejected the idea, emphasizing the need for a Lagos indigene to govern, arguing that non-indigenes should not be allowed to lead the state. The Lagos chapter of the PDP also voiced opposition, asserting that citizens would resist any attempt to impose Seyi Tinubu, questioning the notion of inheritance in politics. Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju echoed similar sentiments, describing the endorsement as disrespectful to the people of Lagos, and challenging the idea of dynastic political succession.
This debate highlights the tension between those who support Seyi Tinubu’s potential and those who see the move as an undemocratic imposition.
