Lauren James faces suspension for rest of tournament after red card
If FIFA’s rules are followed, England prodigy Lauren James might be disqualified from the current Women’s World Cup in Australia after stamping on Nigerian defender Michelle Alozie.
During their Round of 16 match, James was sent for a foul on Alozie in the 70th minute.
Before being told to consult the VAR on-pitch monitor, the referee had previously displayed a yellow.
Although the Super Falcons kept the Lionesses scoreless during extra time, England ultimately prevailed in a 4-2 penalty shootout.
However, our correspondent then discovered that James had played her final World Cup match after checking FIFA regulations, which state that dismissal for aggressive conduct carries a three-match penalty.
FIFA rule states, “A player will be suspended for at least three matches for violent conduct; at least three matches or an appropriate period of time for assault, including elbowing, punching, kicking, biting, spitting or hitting an opponent or a person other than a match official.”
Meanwhile, the Lionesses have a maximum of three fixtures to play as they only qualified for the quarter-finals
