Afenifere, the prominent Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, has pledged to mobilize against the trend of unitarianism in Nigerian politics. In a recent communique following their monthly meeting in Ogun State, the group criticized the proposed establishment of a National Independent Local Government Electoral Commission (NILGEC) for local elections.
Afenifere argued that this move would exacerbate the inefficiencies of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and facilitate the centralization of power, undermining Nigeria’s federal structure. They condemned political gerrymandering and expressed concerns that such initiatives are aimed at transforming Nigeria into a unitary state, especially under the current administration. The organization called for resistance against these efforts to ensure the preservation of democracy in the country.
