The Archbishop of the African Church, Most Reverend Solomon Ojumu, has called on judges to uphold the rule of law, emphasizing that the masses suffer while criminals remain unpunished due to their connections with powerful individuals. Speaking at a church service marking the start of the 2024/2025 Legal Year, he highlighted the societal impact of elite wrongdoing and urged for a more equitable justice system.
Ojumu stated that without justice, peace cannot prevail, and he criticized the complicity of those in power, urging judges to execute their duties diligently. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the judiciary but encouraged them to remain steadfast in their mission to reduce crime.
Governor Dapo Abiodun echoed these sentiments, stressing that justice is a collective responsibility. He assured ongoing support for the judiciary and called for improvements in service delivery, including addressing case backlogs through alternative dispute resolution methods.
Chief Judge Hon Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu pledged efforts towards expediting justice but noted the need for more judges and better infrastructure to support this goal.
