A’Ibom 37 anniversary: Controversy erupts in midim clan Abak LGA, over clan head certification

In a recent ceremony marking Akwa Ibom State’s 37th anniversary, Governor Pastor Umo Eno officially recognized Chief Paul Ebong as the new clan head of Midim Clan in Abak Local Government Area. This decision has sparked significant unrest within the community, particularly given that Chief Sylvester Ibanga had previously been celebrated as the clan head just months prior.

Following the governor’s certification of Chief Ebong, reports indicate that factions within the Midim Clan have formed, leading to escalating tensions. Chief Ibanga, along with four other village heads, is reportedly preparing to seek legal action to contest the governor’s recognition of Ebong, asserting that the selection process violated established traditions.

Critics argue that Chief Ebong’s swift promotion—he is noted to be the youngest village head—was influenced by his connection to retired DIG Udom Ekpoudom, who is also the current pro chancellor at the University of Calabar. They claim that the selection process undermines the traditional hierarchy, which stipulates that the most senior village head should ascend to the clan leadership.

Community members are urging the governor to reconsider his decision, warning that without intervention, the conflict could escalate into violence. If their concerns are not addressed, they are prepared to pursue legal avenues to challenge the certification.
