Akpabio Petitions IGP Over Assassination Allegation by Senator Natasha, Demands Her Prosecution

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has formally petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over what he calls a “criminally defamatory and inciting” allegation made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. She had publicly accused him of orchestrating a plot to assassinate her.

In the petition dated April 3 and .lalso sent to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Akpabio described the accusation as a “heinous lie” aimed at tarnishing his image, stirring public unrest, and putting his life at risk.

The allegation arose from a speech Akpoti-Uduaghan gave on April 1 in Kogi State, where she claimed Akpabio had instructed former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello to have her killed in the state—making it appear as though her own constituents were responsible.

Reacting to the claim, Akpabio wrote in his petition: “This statement is not only a heinous lie but a reckless and deliberate attempt to damage my reputation, endanger my life and security, and incite political unrest.”

He further described it as politically driven and lacking any evidence.

He emphasized that the allegation was a calculated effort to blackmail and vilify him, and he urged the police to launch an immediate investigation and prosecute Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan under relevant laws covering criminal defamation, incitement, and false accusations.

Akpabio also pointed out the damaging impact of the claim, especially considering how widely it had spread across TV, radio, newspapers, and social media.

He stressed that such serious accusations, especially when made by a public official, must be treated with urgency and accountability to protect national peace and uphold democratic institutions.

This development follows a previous dispute between the two senators, during which Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of sexual harassment—a claim that eventually led to her suspension from the Senate over alleged misconduct.
