The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, Anambra State Chapter, has begun an indefinite strike due to the state government’s failure to implement the Consolidated Judiciary Salary Structure (CONJUS). The strike, which started on Monday, has led to the closure of courts across the state including the High Courts, Chief Magistrate’s Courts, and Customary Courts in various locations like Ekwueme Square and Awka.
According to Mr. Henry Ezeoke, the State Chairman of JUSUN, the strike is a response to the government’s non-compliance with agreements made in 2011 and 2015 regarding the implementation of CONJUS. Despite issuing a 21-day ultimatum which went unheeded, the union has proceeded with the indefinite strike, viewing it as the only effective means to compel the government to meet their demands.
As a result of the strike, court proceedings have been halted, and both lawyers and litigants have been turned away from locked court premises. The union has stated that the strike will continue indefinitely until the government fulfills their obligations, with further directives pending from the union.
