Chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State have petitioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alleging a plot by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Minister of Petroleum (Gas) Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, and APC State Chairman Mr. Stephen Ntukekpo to weaken the party and align it with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Governor Umo Eno.
In an open letter titled “The Worrisome State of the APC in Akwa Ibom State: A Call for Your Urgent Intervention,” signed by Elder Okokon James, Hon. Peter Ibanga, and Chief Victor Affiah—representing Uyo, Eket, and Ikot Ekpene senatorial districts—the elders urged President Tinubu to step in and revive the party in the state.
The letter expresses deep concern over what they describe as “selfishness, greed, betrayal, and treachery” within the party, stating that Akpabio’s actions amount to “the height of betrayal of confidence and treachery against the party on whose platform he became the Senate President.”
They warned that “history and posterity will not be kind to him and all those he is using as instruments to kill the party.”
The APC leaders accused Akpabio of instructing the party chairman and minister to cripple the party in Akwa Ibom, allegedly to facilitate an easy PDP victory in the 2027 elections in exchange for PDP’s support for his third-term Senate bid.
They also criticized Akpabio’s assumption that Governor Umo Eno would defect to the APC or back Tinubu’s second-term campaign.
Expressing concern over the party’s dwindling strength, they warned the President that unless immediate action is taken, “he won’t have party members to receive him when he comes to the state next year to campaign.”
According to them, the APC’s “soul and spirit” have been handed over to the PDP, leading many members to consider joining an opposition coalition against Tinubu’s second-term ambition.
The letter concluded by holding Akpabio and Ekperikpe Ekpo responsible if APC members defect en masse, emphasizing that the Senate President has weakened the party structure to the point that his own 2027 re-election bid “may be a mirage without the support of the governor and PDP structures.”
