The APC National Secretary, Ajibola Bashiru, has accused Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, of exploiting the recent stampede in Ibadan for political gain.
The tragedy occurred during a funfair at the Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan, which was organized by Naomi Shikemi, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife. At least 40 people, many of them children, lost their lives, with several others hospitalized.
In his reaction, Obi condemned the incident, attributing it to systemic failure in Nigeria, highlighting the dangerous conditions children face due to inequalities in society.
Bashiru, however, criticized Obi’s response, suggesting that Obi was trying to capitalize on the tragedy to promote his 2027 presidential ambitions, and accused him of being “consistently inconsistent” in his political stance.
