The selection of Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo by Governor Seyi Makinde has sparked significant controversy.

The appointment, announced on January 10, 2025, follows over two years of vacancy after the passing of the previous monarch, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi. Despite being approved by the governor, the decision has faced opposition from various quarters, including the traditional kingmakers in Oyo.

The kingmakers, who play a crucial role in the selection process, argue that they did not recommend Owoade and have instead supported Prince Luqman Gbadegesin for the throne.

They have condemned the appointment as “executive recklessness” and claimed it was made without their involvement or proper consultations.

The kingmakers further contend that the selection process was not in line with the Alaafin of Oyo Chieftaincy Declaration of 1967, which dictates that only the Bashorun of Oyo can convene a meeting of the kingmakers to select a new monarch.

Adding to the controversy, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has criticized the appointment as illegal, unlawful, and a violation of constitutional and traditional norms.

The group highlights that a court case challenging the selection process is still pending, and they accuse Governor Makinde of disregarding legal procedures and undermining the town’s customs.

This development has sparked a legal and cultural dispute in Oyo, with many questioning the legitimacy of the governor’s action and its potential long-term implications for the royal institution in the region.
