Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has criticized political and religious leaders for their failure to address the issue of polygamy among Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state. Zulum expressed concern that some IDPs, unable to adequately care for their families, have taken multiple wives, further straining the state’s resources. He lamented that politicians avoid speaking out on this issue due to fear of losing votes, and questioned which Islamic teachers or political figures had condemned this practice. The Governor highlighted the growing number of polygamous families, citing an example of one individual who arrived at the camp with one wife but now has four.
Zulum’s remarks have sparked a range of reactions, with some applauding his honesty and leadership, while others criticized the situation and called for more education and accountability within the region. Some responses also reflected frustration over the broader societal issues contributing to the problem, particularly the challenges surrounding the Almajiri system and the economic strain it places on communities.
