The Akwa Ibom State Judiciary has appointed Chief Magistrate Affiong Victor Usimkah as the new Chief Registrar. The announcement was made in a statement issued by Mr. Gilbert Uko, the Chief Press Secretary to the State’s Chief Judge, Justice Ekaete Obot, on Friday.
Chief Magistrate Usimkah’s appointment follows the elevation of the former Chief Registrar, Chief Magistrate Winifred Umohandi, to the position of a Judge of the Akwa Ibom State High Court. Usimkah, who was the presiding Chief Magistrate at the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Abak, emerged as the successful candidate after a rigorous interview process conducted by the State’s Judicial Service Commission.
The swearing-in ceremony took place on December 23, 2024, with the Chief Judge, Justice Ekaete Fabian-Obot, officiating the proceedings. Justice Obot expressed her gratitude to God for the successful appointment, acknowledging the high caliber of candidates who participated in the interview. She commended Usimkah for displaying humility, grace, and the potential for hard work, qualities she believes will enable her to excel in her new role.
Justice Obot further advised the new Chief Registrar to carry out her duties diligently, without fear or favor. She emphasized the importance of open communication, urging Usimkah to report any challenges she may encounter and seek guidance from her predecessor, Chief Magistrate Winifred Umohandi. The Chief Judge also cautioned her to avoid unnecessary gossip in the course of her work.
In her remarks, Justice Obot recognized the exemplary service of Chief Magistrate Umohandi and expressed confidence that Usimkah would continue to build on the legacy and momentum established by her predecessor.
Chief Magistrate Usimkah, an indigene of Mbo Local Government Area, was born on December 9, 1979. She was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2005 and appointed as a magistrate in 2011. Usimkah is married with children.
This appointment marks a significant step in the leadership of the Akwa Ibom State Judiciary, with expectations high for the new Chief Registrar to further strengthen the administration of justice in the state.
