The National Commissioner of INEC, Sam Olumekun, emphasized the media’s pivotal role in ensuring credible elections during a recent meeting with journalists in Benin. Highlighting the media’s duties, Olumekun stressed the importance of voter education, transparency, and combating misinformation.
He urged journalists to adhere to the Electoral Act 2022, maintain impartiality, and follow INEC’s guidelines. Additionally, he encouraged the media to facilitate the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and ensure that all stakeholders are held accountable.
The Edo Resident Electoral Commissioner and the local Nigeria Union of Journalists’ chairman also supported the initiative, emphasizing the need for high standards in election reporting.
