The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has sought an adjournment in its case against former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello and two others, now scheduled for November 14, 2024. At a recent court hearing, EFCC counsel Rotimi Oyedepo mentioned that a public summons had been issued for Bello, though Justice Maryann Anenih clarified that only the summons was requested.
Defendants’ counsels objected to the adjournment, arguing they were prepared for arraignment and emphasizing the need for fair hearing principles. They expressed frustration over the delay, with Joseph Daudu, representing the second defendant, Umar Oricha, criticizing the use of a “human shield” argument to postpone proceedings.
While Oyedepo maintained that bail applications could not be considered until all defendants were present due to the joint nature of the charges, the judge allowed for formal written applications for bail. She scheduled the next court dates for November 14 and 20 for further responses and potential arraignment.
